Trail Ridge Road/Beaver Meadow Scenic Byway crosses Rocky Mountain National Park in north-central Colorado, designated as both a National Scenic Byway and an All-American Road. Climbing to 12,183 feet, it is the highest continuous paved road in North America and one of the most dramatic mountain drives on the continent, traversing the Continental Divide through three distinct ecosystems.

The drive begins in montane forest of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, ascends through subalpine spruce-fir woodland, and emerges above treeline into genuine alpine tundra. More than eleven miles of the road sit above 11,500 feet, where the landscape resembles Arctic regions thousands of miles to the north. Tiny wildflowers, pikas, marmots, and white-tailed ptarmigan inhabit this fragile environment during the brief summer growing season.

Alpine Visitor Center at Fall River Pass sits at 11,796 feet and offers exhibits, a gift shop, and panoramic views. Numerous pullouts and overlooks provide opportunities to spot elk in the meadows below, watch for bighorn sheep on rocky slopes, and photograph the Never Summer Mountains and Mummy Range stretching across the horizon.

The road typically opens on Memorial Day weekend and closes in mid-October, depending on snow conditions. Even in summer, summit temperatures can drop below freezing, and afternoon thunderstorms develop rapidly above treeline. Start the drive early to avoid afternoon lightning, carry warm layers, and bring sun protection for the intense high-altitude UV exposure. A national park entrance fee or pass is required.
