Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway

Colorado

49.0 miles

Rising from the foothills west of Denver, the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway carries travelers on a breathtaking 49-mile journey to one of Colorado’s most iconic peaks. This state-designated scenic route climbs through dramatic ecological zones, from ponderosa pine forests through alpine tundra, culminating at over 14,000 feet in elevation.

Along the way, witness sweeping vistas of the Continental Divide, pristine mountain lakes, and meadows carpeted with wildflowers during summer months. Keep watch for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and marmots thriving in their high-altitude habitat. Echo Lake provides an idyllic rest stop with picnic areas and stunning reflections of surrounding peaks.

The byway passes through historic Idaho Springs, where visitors can explore mining heritage, soak in natural hot springs, or grab a meal before ascending. Summit Lake, one of the highest lakes in North America accessible by paved road, offers short hikes with panoramic alpine views.

Best time to visit: Late June through early September, when the road is fully open and wildflowers bloom.

Allow: 3-4 hours for a leisurely round-trip drive, longer if hiking or exploring stops along the way.

This unforgettable drive puts Colorado’s alpine grandeur within easy reach of Denver.
