White Pass Scenic Byway

Stretching 120 miles across Washington’s Cascade Range, the White Pass Scenic Byway (US 12) delivers one of the Pacific Northwest’s most dramatic mountain crossings. This National Scenic Byway connects the lush forests near Chehalis to the sun-drenched valleys near Naches, offering travelers an unforgettable journey through diverse landscapes.

The route winds past towering old-growth Douglas firs, crystal-clear rivers, and alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers. Highlights include the shores of Rimrock Lake, the stunning White Pass Ski Area summit at 4,500 feet, and breathtaking views of Mount Rainier’s southeastern flanks. Stop at the Palisades viewpoint for sweeping vistas of the Tieton River canyon, or explore trails leading into the Goat Rocks Wilderness.

History buffs will appreciate interpretive sites along the route, while outdoor enthusiasts can access world-class hiking, fishing, and camping. The Tieton River offers excellent whitewater rafting each fall during the “flip-flop” release.

The best time to drive is late June through October when the pass is reliably clear and wildflowers paint the meadows. Allow 3-4 hours for the drive alone, though a full day lets you savor the viewpoints, short hikes, and charming mountain communities along the way.
