Alkali Lake OHV Area offers 11 miles of motorized trails through a unique dune vegetative landscape in southeastern New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the area, allowing visitors to set up camp near their vehicles and ride directly from their site. No developed campgrounds or facilities exist here, so pack in all water, supplies, and waste containers. The proximity to Carlsbad—roughly a 20-minute drive—provides convenient access to fuel, groceries, and other services before heading out.

The sandy, vegetated dunes create varied riding conditions suited for dirt bikes, ATVs, and UTVs. Riders should expect soft terrain that can shift with weather and wind patterns. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for camping and riding, while summer brings intense heat typical of the Chihuahuan Desert.
