San Juan Skyway
Colorado
233.0 miles
Winding 233 miles through Colorado’s rugged San Juan Mountains, the San Juan Skyway delivers some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in North America. This All-American Road traces a spectacular loop connecting Durango, Cortez, Ridgway, and Ouray through landscapes that shift from red-rock canyons to dense evergreen forests to jagged 14,000-foot peaks.
The route’s crown jewel is the Million Dollar Highway between Silverton and Ouray—a breathtaking stretch carved into sheer cliff faces with hairpin turns and stunning drop-offs that will leave you gripping the wheel and gasping at the views. Along the way, discover the historic mining towns of Silverton and Telluride, where Victorian storefronts now house boutiques and restaurants beneath towering mountain backdrops.
Stop at Mesa Verde National Park near Cortez to explore ancient cliff dwellings, soak in the natural hot springs at Ouray, or ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad through otherwise inaccessible wilderness.
Plan a full day to complete the loop, though two days allows for proper exploration. Late September through early October offers the most spectacular scenery, when golden aspens blanket the mountainsides in brilliant color. Summer brings wildflower meadows and comfortable temperatures, while winter transforms the route into a snow-covered wonderland—chains recommended.
