Dark Sky Park

Designated as an International Dark Sky Park in 2016, Cosmic Campground offers exceptional stargazing conditions with minimal light pollution and high-altitude clarity. The remote location provides Bortle Class 1-2 skies, among the darkest in the continental United States.

What You’ll See: The Milky Way stretches brilliantly overhead, revealing dust lanes and star clouds invisible from urban areas. Expect clear views of Andromeda Galaxy, Orion Nebula, and numerous Messier objects with modest equipment. During peak conditions, zodiacal light and gegenschein become visible.

Best Timing: Visit during new moon phases from May through October for optimal conditions. Prime viewing occurs between astronomical twilight and 2 AM when the galactic core is positioned highest.

Equipment & Facilities: Bring binoculars or a portable telescope—the site accommodates astronomy setups with flat observing areas. No on-site facilities exist, so pack accordingly with red flashlights to preserve night vision.

Programs: Check local astronomy club schedules for organized star parties and guided observation events throughout summer months.
