Five Finger Islands Light

Standing guard over Alaska’s Frederick Sound since 1902, Five Finger Islands Light is one of the state’s most iconic and remote lighthouses. Built to guide vessels through the treacherous Inside Passage, it was the first lighthouse constructed in Alaska and operated by the U.S. Lighthouse Service for decades before automation. The station remains active, its beacon still warning mariners of rocky waters. The lighthouse is not open to the public, though it can be viewed from passing ferries and charter boats. Summer months offer the best photography, with long daylight hours and dramatic coastal backdrops. Nearby attractions include whale watching in Frederick Sound and the charming town of Petersburg.
