Cape Disappointment Light
Columbia River · Washington
Perched on the rugged headlands of Cape Disappointment, Washington, this historic lighthouse has guided mariners past the treacherous Columbia River Bar since 1856 — making it the oldest operating lighthouse in the Pacific Northwest. The tower stands watch over one of the most dangerous river entrances in the world, where the Columbia meets the Pacific in a clash of powerful currents.
The lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing, but visitors can hike the scenic Cape Disappointment Trail for dramatic views of the tower against crashing waves. Late afternoon offers the best photography light, with golden hour illuminating the cliffs.
Nearby, explore the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, North Head Lighthouse, and Waikiki Beach within Cape Disappointment State Park.
