Standing sentinel over Munising, Michigan since 1908, this steel-skeleton rear range light guided vessels safely through the treacherous waters of Grand Island Channel. Paired with a front range light, the two beacons worked in tandem — when aligned, mariners knew they were on course. The tower remains an active navigational aid under U.S. Coast Guard operation.

The light is not open to public climbing, but photographers can capture striking shots from surrounding vantage points. Late afternoon light in autumn, with Munising’s famous fall foliage as backdrop, offers the best compositions.
