Mahukona Light

Standing along the rugged North Kohala coast, Mahukona Light has guided mariners since 1915, when it was built to serve the once-thriving Mahukona Harbor — a key shipping point for sugar plantations. The automated light remains active today, marking this historic stretch of coastline.

The lighthouse is not open to the public and visitors cannot climb the tower, but it can be viewed and photographed from the surrounding area. Golden hour provides the best lighting, with the Kohala Mountains as a dramatic backdrop.

Nearby, Mahukona Beach Park offers excellent snorkeling over submerged harbor ruins, while Lapakahi State Historical Park to the north preserves an ancient Hawaiian fishing village worth exploring.
