Sam Houston National Forest

Spanning 163,264 acres just 50 miles north of Houston, Sam Houston National Forest offers a rare escape into East Texas piney woods without straying far from urban convenience. Established in 1936, this protected woodland has matured into one of the state’s most accessible natural retreats.

The forest’s crown jewel is the 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail, portions of which hold National Recreation Trail designation. This pathway cuts through dense pine and hardwood forests, crossing creeks and wetlands that support diverse wildlife populations. Hikers can tackle day sections or plan multi-day backpacking trips through terrain that shifts between upland ridges and bottomland swamps.

Beyond hiking, the forest accommodates horseback riding on designated trails, fishing in stocked ponds and Lake Conroe’s nearby waters, and seasonal hunting under Texas Parks & Wildlife regulations. Summer draws swimmers to recreation areas, while birders and wildlife enthusiasts find year-round opportunities to spot white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and migratory songbirds.

Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions for extended outdoor activity, with mild temperatures and lower humidity than the sweltering summer months. Winter remains viable for hiking and hunting, though occasional cold fronts can bring brief freezes.

The New Waverly Ranger District office serves as the primary visitor contact point, providing maps, permits, and current trail conditions. From Houston, reach the forest via Interstate 45 North—a straightforward drive that puts wilderness within easy reach of weekend adventurers and day-trippers alike.
