Rising from the Great Plains of western Nebraska, the Nebraska National Forest holds a remarkable distinction: its Bessey Ranger District contains the largest hand-planted forest in the United States. What began as a bold experiment in 1902 to prove trees could thrive on the Sandhills became a 90,000-acre testament to human determination and ecological adaptation.
The forest spans 140,813 acres across two distinct units. The Bessey unit near Halsey features rolling sand dunes transformed by generations of planted ponderosa and eastern red cedar, while the Pine Ridge unit near Chadron showcases dramatic buttes and natural pine woodlands carved into the rugged escarpment.
Five campgrounds serve visitors throughout the forest. The Bessey Recreation Complex offers developed facilities including swimming and picnic areas, while Toadstool Campground provides access to the otherworldly Toadstool Geologic Park with its mushroom-shaped rock formations and fossil beds. Soldier Creek, Red Cloud, and Roberts Tract campgrounds offer more primitive experiences for those seeking solitude.
Hiking trails wind through both units, with opportunities for fishing in stocked ponds and seasonal streams. The Pine Ridge unit delivers some of Nebraska’s most striking scenery, with ponderosa-studded ridgelines overlooking vast prairie expanses.
Summer and early fall bring ideal conditions for camping and hiking, though spring wildflowers transform the grassland edges. Winter visitors find peaceful cross-country skiing terrain.
Access the Bessey unit via Highway 2, approximately 25 miles west of Halsey. Reach the Pine Ridge unit from Highway 385 south of Chadron. Both areas remain open year-round, though some facilities close seasonally.
