Dunbar Cave State Natural Area
Tennessee (Montgomery County)
Tucked into the hills of Montgomery County, Tennessee, Dunbar Cave State Natural Area protects 144 acres of karst landscape centered around one of the most historically significant caves in the Southeast. The cave mouth—a massive, cathedral-like opening—has drawn people for thousands of years, from prehistoric Native Americans who left petroglyphs on its walls to 1930s-era big band crowds who danced on a wooden floor built just inside the entrance. That layered history, paired with genuine geological wonder, sets Dunbar Cave apart from typical state parks.
Guided cave tours run seasonally and are the main draw, offering a close look at the ancient rock art and the cave’s impressive formations. Above ground, roughly eight miles of trails wind through mixed hardwood forest and along the shores of Swan Lake, where birding is excellent year-round. The lake trail is flat and accessible, making it a solid option for families with young children or anyone looking for an easy walk. Wildflower displays peak in April and May, and the surrounding woods are vibrant during fall foliage season.
There are no camping facilities at Dunbar Cave, so plan on day-use visits only. Clarksville is just minutes away for lodging and dining. Spring and early fall offer the most comfortable weather for hiking, and cave tours tend to book up on weekends, so reserving ahead is smart.
Expect a quieter, more contemplative experience here—this is a place built for curiosity, not crowds.
