Cumberland Mountain State Park

Nestled in the heart of Cumberland County, Tennessee, Cumberland Mountain State Park spreads across 1,720 acres of the Cumberland Plateau — one of the largest timbered plateaus in North America. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s, the park’s rustic stone-and-timber structures remain some of the finest examples of CCC craftsmanship in the state, giving the entire park a sense of history you can feel the moment you arrive.

Byrd Lake sits at the center of everything here. The 50-acre lake was created by one of the largest masonry dams ever built by the CCC, and it draws anglers after bass, bluegill, and catfish year-round. A paved trail loops the shoreline, making it an easy walk for families or a peaceful morning jog. Beyond the lake, over 15 miles of trails wind through hardwood forests and past sandstone rock formations, offering manageable day hikes with rewarding views of the plateau’s layered geology.

The park’s campground offers both tent and RV sites with hookups, along with a group camp lodge. For those who prefer a roof overhead, fully equipped cabins tucked into the woods provide a comfortable base. The on-site restaurant — a rarity among Tennessee state parks — serves Southern-style meals with a view of the lake.

Spring wildflower season and fall foliage are the prime windows to visit, though summer swimming at the pool and mild winter hiking keep the park active all year. Cumberland Mountain delivers a genuine Appalachian experience without the steep climbs.
