Tucked into the rugged Cumberland Plateau in Fentress County, Colditz Cove State Natural Area protects 165 acres of some of Tennessee’s most dramatic scenery. The star attraction is Northrup Falls, a 76-foot waterfall that plunges over a massive sandstone overhang into a shaded grotto below — one of the most photogenic cascades in the state.

The trail to the falls follows Northrup Creek through a narrow gorge lined with towering hemlock and hardwood forest, passing beneath sandstone bluffs draped in ferns and moss. The old-growth trees here are among the finest remaining stands on the Plateau, creating a cathedral-like canopy that keeps the cove cool even in midsummer. The main out-and-back trail runs roughly 2 miles round trip with moderate elevation change, making it accessible for most hikers while still feeling genuinely remote.

Spring brings the best waterfall flow and a carpet of wildflowers — trillium, hepatica, and bloodroot — along the creek banks. Fall foliage season transforms the gorge into a tunnel of color. Winter visits offer a chance to see ice formations on the rock faces, though trails can be slippery.

There are no campgrounds or developed facilities within the natural area itself, so plan accordingly — bring water and wear sturdy footwear on the rocky trail. Nearby Pickett CCC Memorial State Park offers full camping amenities and makes an excellent base camp.

Colditz Cove rewards visitors who appreciate wild places left largely untouched. It’s a short hike to a big payoff.
