Tucked into the rolling ridgelines of Sullivan County, Bays Mountain State Natural Area protects 3,650 acres of Appalachian forest, lake, and wildlife habitat — making it one of the largest city-owned parks in Tennessee. The centerpiece is a 44-acre reservoir surrounded by dense hardwood forest, connected by over 40 miles of trails that wind through hemlock-shaded ravines, across mountain ridges, and past wildflower-filled meadows.

What sets Bays Mountain apart is its nature center and animal habitats. A resident wolf pack, bobcats, raptors, and a reptile collection give visitors — especially families — up-close encounters with native Appalachian wildlife. The planetarium offers astronomy shows, and a barge ride across the lake provides a peaceful way to access trailheads on the far shore.

Hiking ranges from easy lakeside strolls to strenuous ridge climbs with views stretching across the Holston Valley. Mountain biking is permitted on designated trails, and the lake is open to fishing (no private boats — the park keeps things quiet). Birdwatchers will find warblers, herons, and the occasional bald eagle, particularly near the water.

Spring brings trillium and azalea blooms along the forest floor, while fall delivers some of Sullivan County’s finest leaf color. Summer weekends draw crowds to the nature center, so weekday visits offer a more solitary experience. Winter is the quietest season and ideal for wolf-watching.
