West Pollock Recreation Area

Tucked along the shores of Lake Oahe in Campbell County, West Pollock Recreation Area offers 243 acres of wide-open South Dakota landscape where the northern plains meet one of the Missouri River’s great reservoirs. Visitors should plan to be largely self-sufficient, as services in this remote stretch of Campbell County are limited. The nearest town, Pollock, is small but can cover basic supply needs.

The best window to visit runs from late May through September, when lake conditions are ideal and daytime temperatures are comfortable. Summer weekends see modest crowds, but nothing like the packed recreation areas further south along the Missouri. That solitude is part of the appeal.
