Tucked along the Missouri River in Bon Homme County, Springfield Recreation Area offers a compact but rewarding 24-acre escape in southeastern South Dakota. Springfield Recreation Area sits near the historic town of Springfield, giving visitors a quieter alternative to the busier recreation areas further upstream. The surrounding Bon Homme County landscape is classic South Dakota prairie — wide open, unhurried, and genuinely peaceful.

The best time to visit runs from late May through September, when the lake is warm enough for swimming and the fishing is most productive. Early fall brings fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures for hiking and shore fishing.
