Spirit Mound Historic Prairie
South Dakota (Clay County)
Spirit Mound Historic Prairie sits in Clay County, South Dakota, where Lewis and Clark once walked. On August 25, 1804, the explorers hiked to this prominent hill after hearing Yankton Sioux stories of “little devils” — fierce, 18-inch spirits said to guard the mound. That journey makes Spirit Mound one of the few Lewis and Clark expedition sites you can visit that looks much as it did two centuries ago.
The 320-acre park protects one of the last remnants of native tallgrass prairie in the region. A well-maintained one-mile trail climbs gradually from the parking area to the mound’s summit, where you’re rewarded with sweeping views of the Missouri River valley and the surrounding plains. Interpretive signs along the route explain both the expedition’s visit and the prairie ecosystem you’re walking through — big bluestem, purple coneflower, and dozens of other native species that once blanketed the Great Plains.
This is a day-use site, so plan your camping elsewhere. Nearby options include Clay County Park and the Vermillion area. The park is best visited from late spring through early fall, when the prairie grasses are tall and wildflowers are blooming — late June through August is peak color. Spring and fall bring migrating birds and cooler hiking temperatures.
Spirit Mound is a quiet, contemplative stop rather than an adventure destination. Budget about an hour for the hike and time to read the interpretive panels. It’s a place where American history and native landscape meet on a single hilltop.
