Shadehill Recreation Area

Sprawling across 2,150 acres in Perkins County, Shadehill Recreation Area sits along the shores of Shadehill Reservoir in the northwestern corner of South Dakota — a region most travelers never think to explore. That’s exactly what makes it worth the trip.

The reservoir, fed by the Grand River, serves as the centerpiece of the park and draws anglers chasing walleye, northern pike, and perch. The fishing here is genuinely good, not just “good for the area,” and the relative lack of crowds means you can work a shoreline without competing for spots. Boating is popular too, with boat ramps providing easy access to the open water.

Beyond the reservoir, the surrounding grasslands offer a landscape that feels vast and uninterrupted. Hiking and wildlife viewing reward those who slow down — watch for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and the occasional pronghorn moving through the rolling prairie. Birdwatchers will find shorebirds and waterfowl congregating near the water’s edge, particularly during spring and fall migrations.

The recreation area provides campsites for both tent and RV camping, making it a solid base for a multi-day stay. Facilities are straightforward but well-maintained, fitting the no-frills character of the place.

The best time to visit is late May through September, when the water is warm enough for swimming and the fishing peaks. Summer evenings bring dramatic Great Plains sunsets that stretch from horizon to horizon — the kind you simply cannot get in more crowded parks further east.
