Ryerson Station State Park
Pennsylvania (Greene County County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Greene County in southwestern Pennsylvania, Ryerson Station State Park offers 1,164 acres of quiet Appalachian woodland that feels genuinely remote despite sitting just a couple hours from Pittsburgh. Established in 1967, the park centers on the North Fork of Dunkard Creek, a stream valley that winds through dense hardwood forest and open meadows.
The park’s defining story is one of resilience. Its original 62-acre Duke Lake was drained in 2005 after the dam was deemed unsafe, and the landscape has since rewilded into a lush creek valley. Where a lake once stood, hikers now find wildflower meadows and wetland habitat — a rare chance to watch a landscape actively recovering.
Over 20 miles of trails range from easy creekside walks to moderately challenging ridge hikes through oak-hickory forest. The Iron Bridge Trail and Lazear Trail are standouts for fall foliage. Hunting is popular in season across much of the park, and fishing along Dunkard Creek draws anglers after trout and smallmouth bass. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over in winter when the hills get a decent snowpack.
Spring wildflower season (late April through May) and autumn color (mid-October) are the prime windows to visit. Summers are warm and green but rarely crowded — this park stays well under the radar compared to Pennsylvania’s more famous state parks.
Expect a peaceful, unhurried experience. Ryerson Station rewards visitors who appreciate solitude and natural landscapes more than amenities and attractions.
