Kinzua Bridge State Park in McKean County preserves one of Pennsylvania’s most dramatic landmarks — the remnants of the Kinzua Viaduct, once the tallest and longest railroad bridge in the world when it was built in 1882. A tornado partially destroyed the structure in 2003, but what remains has been transformed into the Kinzua Skywalk, a pedestrian walkway extending 600 feet out from the valley rim with a glass-floored observation platform suspended 225 feet above the gorge. Standing on that glass floor, looking straight down into Kinzua Creek valley, is an experience unlike anything else in the state park system.

Beyond the skywalk, this 329-acre park offers hiking trails that wind through hardwood forests and along the valley floor, where you can walk among the massive fallen towers of the original viaduct — a striking reminder of both engineering ambition and nature’s power. The Knox Kane Rail Trail passes through the park for biking and cross-country skiing. Birdwatching is excellent here, particularly during fall migration.

The park was established in 1970 and sits in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds, one of the most remote and least light-polluted regions in the eastern United States. Fall is the standout season, when the surrounding Allegheny Plateau erupts in color and the views from the skywalk are breathtaking. Summer brings comfortable temperatures and full canopy, while winter offers quiet solitude and snow-covered trails. Arrive early on autumn weekends — the skywalk draws crowds when the foliage peaks.
