Fowlers Hollow State Park

Tucked into a narrow valley in Perry County, Fowlers Hollow State Park packs a surprising amount of character into its 104 acres. Established in 1936, this small park sits along the wooded slopes of Tuscarora State Forest, making it feel far more expansive than its modest footprint suggests. The surrounding ridgelines and hemlock-shaded hollows give it a secluded, almost forgotten quality that hikers and solitude-seekers genuinely appreciate.

The park’s namesake hollow channels a small stream through the valley floor, creating a peaceful backdrop for picnicking, fishing, and easy trail walks. Several trails connect into the broader Tuscarora State Forest network, opening up miles of additional hiking and hunting terrain beyond the park boundaries. Birding is rewarding here too — the mixed hardwood and conifer canopy attracts warblers, woodpeckers, and the occasional pileated drumming through the trees.

Fowlers Hollow is one of Pennsylvania’s quieter state parks, which is precisely the draw. You won’t find crowds, programmed activities, or heavy infrastructure. What you will find is a genuine retreat into Pennsylvania’s folded Appalachian ridges, where the pace drops and the forest does most of the talking.

Fall is the standout season, when the narrow valley lights up with color and the cooler air makes trail time comfortable. Spring wildflower displays along the creek are worth the trip as well. Summer brings full canopy shade, keeping the hollow noticeably cooler than the surrounding lowlands.
