Evansburg State Park
Pennsylvania (Montgomery County County)
Tucked into the rolling countryside of Montgomery County, Evansburg State Park offers 3,349 acres of pastoral landscape just 25 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Established in 1979, the park preserves a stretch of Skippack Creek valley that has been farmed since the 1700s, giving it a character distinct from Pennsylvania’s more rugged state parks — open meadows, old-growth hardwoods, and historic stone farmsteads dot the terrain.
Skippack Creek serves as the park’s centerpiece, drawing anglers for stocked trout fishing in spring and smallmouth bass through summer. Eight miles of multi-use trails wind through fields and forest, welcoming hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over when conditions allow. The park also features a well-maintained golf course, making it one of the few Pennsylvania state parks where you can tee off surrounded by protected woodland.
History buffs will appreciate the Germantown Academy Schoolhouse, dating to 1745 and one of the oldest surviving school buildings in the country. Several 18th-century farmsteads remain visible along the trails, offering a quiet window into colonial-era rural life.
Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions — wildflower blooms in April and vivid foliage in October make these peak seasons. Summer brings lush greenery but also humidity and mosquitoes near the creek.
Expect a park that feels more like settled countryside than wilderness — peaceful, accessible, and ideal for a half-day escape from the Philadelphia metro area without a long drive.
