Bushy Run Battlefield State Park
Pennsylvania (Westmoreland County County)
Bushy Run Battlefield State Park preserves the site of one of the most significant battles of Pontiac’s War. On August 5-6, 1763, British Colonel Henry Bouquet led a force of roughly 500 soldiers against a coalition of Delaware, Shawnee, Mingo, and Wyandot warriors in a fierce two-day engagement. Bouquet’s eventual victory helped break the siege of Fort Pitt and marked a turning point in the frontier conflict that had swept across the region.
Today the park’s rolling hills and open meadows look remarkably similar to how they appeared over 260 years ago, giving visitors a rare chance to walk the actual ground where history unfolded. The on-site museum houses period weapons, uniforms, and artifacts recovered from the battlefield, while interpretive trails wind through the terrain with markers explaining troop movements and key moments of the fighting. A large flour-bag monument on the hilltop marks the site of Bouquet’s defensive circle during the first day’s engagement.
The park hosts annual reenactments and living-history weekends, typically in early August near the battle’s anniversary, drawing participants from across the mid-Atlantic. These events are the best time to visit if you want the full experience, though the quiet grounds reward a visit any time from spring through fall. Picnic areas are available, and the gentle terrain makes for easy walking.
This is a day-use park with no camping facilities. For overnight stays, nearby Linn Run and Keystone State Parks both offer campgrounds within a short drive.
