Blue Knob State Park
Pennsylvania (Bedford County County)
Blue Knob State Park sits high in the Allegheny Mountains of Bedford County, centered around Pennsylvania’s second-highest peak at 3,146 feet. Established in 1945, the park’s 5,874 acres offer some of the most rugged and elevated terrain in the state, making it a destination for visitors who want mountain experiences without leaving Pennsylvania.
The park’s namesake summit rewards hikers with sweeping views across three counties, and over 20 miles of trails wind through dense hardwood forests and rocky ridgelines. In winter, Blue Knob All Seasons Resort operates a ski area adjacent to the park, giving the region a year-round draw that most state parks lack. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing keep the trails busy across seasons.
A swimming pool provides relief during humid summer months, and the park maintains picnic areas scattered throughout the mountainside. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during season, drawing sportsmen to the heavily wooded slopes each fall.
The elevation creates a noticeably cooler microclimate compared to the surrounding valleys, which makes Blue Knob particularly appealing during July and August when lowland Pennsylvania swelters. Fall foliage arrives early here — often peaking in mid-October — and the high vantage points make for outstanding leaf-peeping.
Visitors should come prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather, especially at the summit. Roads within the park are steep and winding, adding to the sense that you’ve found a pocket of genuine Appalachian wilderness just a few hours from Pittsburgh or Harrisburg.
