Walnut Creek State Park

Tucked into the rolling hills of Osage County, Walnut Creek State Park offers 1,429 acres of classic Oklahoma landscape where tallgrass prairie meets wooded creek bottoms. Established in 1966, the park sits along the shores of Keystone Lake, giving visitors easy access to some of the best fishing and boating in north-central Oklahoma.

The lake is the main draw here. Anglers come for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and sand bass, with productive spots scattered along the park’s shoreline. A boat ramp makes launching easy, and bank fishing works well for those without a vessel. Beyond the water, the park’s terrain rewards hikers and wildlife watchers — white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and a variety of songbirds move through the oak and hickory woodlands regularly.

Spring and fall deliver the best conditions. Spring brings wildflowers across the prairie sections and comfortable temperatures for hiking, while fall offers cooler air, fewer crowds, and reliable fishing as water temperatures drop. Summers are hot and humid, typical of northeastern Oklahoma, but the lake keeps things manageable.

The park provides picnic areas, restrooms, and open spaces well-suited for family outings and group gatherings. Its relatively quiet atmosphere compared to nearby Keystone State Park makes it a solid pick for visitors who want lake access without the weekend crowds.

Walnut Creek State Park sits about 20 miles west of Tulsa, making it an easy day trip or a laid-back weekend escape from the city.
