Foss State Park

Nestled along the shores of Foss Reservoir in Washita County, Foss State Park offers 1,749 acres of western Oklahoma landscape where red-dirt plains meet open water. Established in 1961, the park has grown into one of the region’s favorite getaways for boating, fishing, and escaping the noise of city life.

Foss Reservoir is the main draw here. The 8,800-acre lake supports excellent fishing for walleye, striped bass, largemouth bass, and catfish — walleye fishing in particular puts Foss on the map for Oklahoma anglers. A full-service marina provides boat rentals and slip access, making it easy to get on the water even if you didn’t bring your own rig.

Beyond the lake, the park features hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through mixed-grass prairie and stands of red cedar. Wildlife watchers will find white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and a solid roster of migratory birds, especially during spring and fall flyovers. A public swimming beach gives families a low-key spot to cool off in summer.

Camping options range from tent sites to RV hookups, with several spots offering direct lake views. Cabins are also available for those who prefer a roof overhead.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when water levels are high and the fishing is at its peak. Winter weekends bring quieter shores and surprisingly good walleye runs. Come prepared for wind — this is western Oklahoma, after all.
