Shawnee State Park
Ohio (Scioto County)
Tucked into the rugged hills of southern Ohio’s Scioto County, Shawnee State Park sits at the heart of what locals call the “Little Smokies” — a landscape of deep hollows, forested ridges, and winding creeks that feels more like Appalachia than the Midwest. Spanning 1,163 acres and bordered by Ohio’s largest state forest, this park offers a surprisingly wild experience just two hours from Columbus or Cincinnati.
The hiking here is the main draw. The Backpack Trail loops through 40-plus miles of remote forest terrain, while shorter day hikes wind past wildflower-filled meadows and sandstone outcrops. Spring brings waves of trillium and redbud blooms across the hillsides, and fall transforms the canopy into some of the most vivid color in the state.
Turkey Creek Lake anchors the park’s water recreation, with fishing for bass and bluegill, kayaking, and a small swimming beach. Birders come specifically for cerulean warblers and other neotropical species that nest in the surrounding old-growth forest — it’s one of Ohio’s best birding destinations.
The park campground offers both electric and full-hookup sites, along with a lodge and cabins for those who prefer a roof overhead. Sites fill fast on autumn weekends, so book early if you’re planning a fall visit.
Shawnee rewards visitors who want something rougher and quieter than Ohio’s more manicured parks. If you’re looking for genuine backcountry feel without crossing state lines, this is the place.
