Mohican State Park sits in the wooded hills of Ashland County, Ohio, where the Clear Fork of the Mohican River has carved a gorge through ancient hemlock forest. Spanning 1,115 acres, the park anchors a much larger recreation corridor that includes the adjacent Mohican-Memorial State Forest, giving visitors access to some of the most rugged terrain in Ohio’s otherwise gentle landscape.

The Clear Fork Gorge is the park’s centerpiece — a dramatic ravine lined with towering eastern hemlocks, some centuries old, that create a cool, shaded microclimate even in midsummer. The Lyons Falls Trail drops into the gorge to reach a picturesque waterfall, making it one of the most popular short hikes in the state. Beyond that, over 25 miles of trails wind through the park and surrounding forest, open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders depending on the route.

The Clear Fork is a destination for canoeing and kayaking, with outfitters in nearby Loudonville — Ohio’s self-proclaimed “Canoe Capital” — running trips from spring through fall. Fishing for smallmouth bass in the river draws a quieter but dedicated crowd.

The park’s campground offers electric and non-electric sites, and the Mohican Lodge provides full-service rooms for those who prefer a roof overhead. Cabins are available year-round.

Visit in mid-October for peak fall color against the evergreen hemlocks — the contrast is striking. Spring brings wildflowers and strong river flow for paddling. Summer weekends are busy; midweek visits offer more solitude.
