William B. Umstead State Park

Tucked between Raleigh and Durham in North Carolina’s Piedmont region, William B. Umstead State Park offers 5,599 acres of rolling hardwood forest, quiet creeks, and rocky ridgelines — a surprising pocket of wilderness just minutes from the Research Triangle’s urban sprawl. Established in 1945, the park has served generations of locals as a go-to escape without the long drive.

Three man-made lakes — Big Lake, Sycamore Lake, and Company Mill Creek — anchor the park’s landscape, providing still-water fishing for bass and bream and peaceful canoe launches. Over 20 miles of hiking trails wind through towering oaks and loblolly pines, ranging from easy lakeside strolls like the Sal’s Branch Trail to more rugged routes along Company Mill Creek that reward with small cascades after a good rain. Mountain bikers share a dedicated 13-mile network of singletrack on the Reedy Creek side, and horseback riders have their own designated trails as well.

The park’s camping options are notably walk-in only — no drive-up sites here — which keeps the campgrounds quiet and uncrowded. Expect a half-mile to mile-long hike to reach your site, making it a good introduction to backcountry-style camping without a full commitment.

Spring wildflower season (late March through April) and autumn leaf color (mid-October through November) are the standout times to visit, though summer’s thick canopy provides welcome shade on hot Piedmont days. Bird activity peaks during spring and fall migration, with warblers and thrushes passing through in impressive variety.
