Theodore Roosevelt State Natural Area

Tucked along the southern shore of Bogue Banks near Pine Knoll Shores, Theodore Roosevelt State Natural Area preserves one of the last undisturbed maritime forests on North Carolina’s barrier islands. Established in 1971, this coastal gem protects a rare ecosystem where live oaks draped in Spanish moss shelter a tangle of loblolly pine, American holly, and wild olive — a landscape largely unchanged for centuries.

The natural area sits adjacent to the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, and visitors often pair the two for a full day on the coast. A network of short trails winds through the maritime forest canopy before opening onto salt marsh vistas along Bogue Sound. Birding is exceptional here — warblers, herons, and osprey are regulars, and the fall migration brings waves of songbirds funneling along the barrier island. The Roosevelt Trail loop covers about 1.5 miles of easy, shaded walking that works well for families.

This is not a park built for camping or heavy recreation. There are no campgrounds, picnic shelters, or swimming areas. What you get instead is quiet immersion in a coastal forest ecosystem that has largely vanished elsewhere along the Carolina coast. The lack of development is the whole point.

Spring and fall are the best seasons to visit — mild temperatures, active wildlife, and thinner crowds than the summer beach rush on Bogue Banks. Winter walks are equally rewarding on calm days. Admission is free, and the trails remain open year-round from dawn to dusk.
