Rising nearly 1,400 feet above the rolling Piedmont landscape, Pilot Mountain State Park has been a landmark for travelers since long before North Carolina designated it a state park in 1968. The park’s defining feature — Big Pinnacle, a dramatic quartzite knob that juts 200 feet above its base — is visible from miles in every direction and has guided explorers for centuries, earning the Saura people’s name “Jomeokee,” meaning “great guide.”

Spanning 3,872 acres across two distinct sections, the park offers more than just a stunning photo opportunity. The Mountain Section surrounds the iconic pinnacle with over 20 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy loops to strenuous ridge walks. The Jomeokee Trail circles the base of Big Pinnacle, delivering panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the Piedmont plains stretching east. The Yadkin River Section, connected by a corridor trail, adds canoeing, kayaking, and fishing along one of North Carolina’s most scenic waterways.

Rock climbing draws experienced climbers to the park’s exposed faces, while birders come for the peregrine falcons that nest on the cliffs. Horseback riding trails wind through the river section’s bottomland forests.

Fall brings the best conditions — crisp air, blazing foliage, and thinner crowds than summer weekends, when the parking areas near the summit can fill by mid-morning. Spring wildflower season runs a close second.
