Jordan Lake State Recreation Area

Tucked into North Carolina’s Piedmont region, Jordan Lake State Recreation Area has drawn families, anglers, and weekend campers to its shores since opening in 1981. The centerpiece is the 13,900-acre B. Everett Jordan Reservoir, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake that stretches across wooded coves and quiet inlets — making it one of the largest bodies of water in the central part of the state.

On the lake itself, boating and fishing dominate. Largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish keep anglers busy, while several swim beaches open from late May through early September. Hiking trails wind through mixed hardwood forests, though most are short — this is more of a waterfront park than a backcountry destination.

Spring and early fall offer the most comfortable conditions, with mild temperatures and thinner crowds. Summer weekends fill up fast, particularly at the campgrounds closest to the water.
