Hammocks Beach State Park sits along North Carolina’s southern coast in Onslow County, offering one of the most unspoiled barrier island experiences on the East Coast. Established in 1961 and spanning 1,611 acres, the park centers on Bear Island — a three-and-a-half-mile stretch of pristine beach accessible only by ferry, passenger boat, or kayak, which keeps crowds thin even in peak summer months.

The ferry ride itself sets the tone. As the mainland recedes, salt marshes give way to open water, and Bear Island emerges with wide, shell-studded beaches backed by rolling dunes. Sea turtles nest here between May and August, and the park actively monitors nesting sites — visitors who time it right may spot hatchlings making their dash to the Atlantic.

Kayaking and canoeing through the Intracoastal Waterway and surrounding marshes rank among the park’s best offerings. The paddle out to Bear Island takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes and passes through habitat rich with herons, osprey, and fiddler crabs. On the island, swimming, surf fishing, and beachcombing fill the day. A bathhouse with showers and restrooms keeps things comfortable.

The best window to visit runs from late May through September, when the ferry operates daily. Spring and fall bring fewer visitors and excellent birding, though ferry service is limited to weekends.
