Grandfather Mountain State Park
Rising to 5,964 feet along the Blue Ridge, Grandfather Mountain State Park protects one of the most ecologically significant peaks in the southern Appalachians. Established in 2009 after decades of conservation effort, the park’s 3,647 acres in Avery, Watauga, and Caldwell counties harbor rare spruce-fir forests, rocky outcrops, and some of the most rugged hiking terrain in North Carolina.
The park’s crown jewel is the Profile Trail, a strenuous 3.4-mile climb gaining over 2,000 feet to Calloway Peak — the highest point on the Blue Ridge. The Grandfather Trail traverses exposed rock faces with ladder sections and cables, drawing experienced hikers looking for genuine challenge. For something gentler, the Daniel Boone Scout Trail offers a more moderate approach through hardwood forests and wildflower meadows.
Backcountry camping is available at designated sites along the trail system, requiring a free permit from the park office. Sites are primitive — no water hookups, no showers — but waking up above the clouds at 5,000 feet makes the trade-off worthwhile.
The best window for visiting runs from late May through October. June brings peak rhododendron blooms along the ridgelines, while October delivers some of the most dramatic fall color in the eastern United States. Winter hiking is possible but demands full preparedness — ice and whiteout conditions are common above 5,000 feet.
