Goose Creek State Park sits along the north shore of the Pamlico River in eastern North Carolina’s Coastal Plain, where freshwater creeks meet brackish tidal waters to create one of the state’s most distinctive coastal ecosystems. Established in 1974, the park’s 1,672 acres protect a landscape of cypress swamps, hardwood forests, and salt marshes that feels worlds away from the more visited beaches to the east.

The park’s eight miles of trails wind through diverse habitats, from boardwalks spanning dark-water swamps draped in Spanish moss to upland paths through longleaf pine forests. Flatwater paddlers will find Goose Creek itself to be a highlight — the tidal creek is navigable by kayak and canoe, offering close encounters with great blue herons, ospreys, and the occasional river otter. Fishing along the Pamlico River yields spot, croaker, and flounder depending on the season.

The swimming area on the Pamlico River provides a refreshing option during warmer months, though visitors should note this is a river beach rather than ocean surf. Picnic shelters overlook the water and make solid lunch spots after a morning on the trails.

Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions for hiking and paddling, with fewer insects than the humid summer months. Winter brings migratory waterfowl and quieter trails.

Goose Creek rewards visitors who appreciate understated wild places — no roller coasters or boardwalks, just tidal rhythms, bird calls, and some of the best swamp scenery on the Coastal Plain.
