Fort Macon State Park

Standing guard at the eastern tip of Bogue Banks since 1834, Fort Macon State Park pairs Civil War history with some of North Carolina’s finest Atlantic coastline. Established as a state park in 1924, this 424-acre barrier island gem draws visitors who come for the beach and stay for the beautifully restored pentagonal fort — one of the most intact coastal defense structures on the Eastern Seaboard.

The fort itself is the centerpiece, with self-guided tours through vaulted casemates, gun emplacements, and a central courtyard that hosted both Confederate and Union soldiers. Rangers lead guided tours and Civil War reenactments throughout the year, bringing the site’s military history to life in ways that resonate with all ages.

Beyond the fort, a wide swimming beach with lifeguards (seasonal) and a bathhouse makes this one of the most accessible ocean beaches in the Crystal Coast region. A 1.5-mile Elliott Coues Nature Trail winds through maritime forest and marsh, offering solid birding — especially during spring and fall migrations when shorebirds concentrate along the tidal flats. Surf fishing for red drum, bluefish, and flounder is popular along the beach and jetty.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall for swimming, though the fort and trails are enjoyable year-round. Winter brings fewer crowds and excellent birding conditions.

No camping is available within the park, but nearby options along Bogue Banks and at Cedar Point across the sound fill that gap easily.
