Bear Paw State Natural Area
North Carolina (Mountains County)
Tucked into the rugged terrain of Mountains County, Bear Paw State Natural Area protects one of North Carolina’s quietly remarkable mountain landscapes. Designated as a State Natural Area in 2008, Bear Paw was set aside specifically for its ecological significance — rare plant communities, mature forest stands, and the kind of undisturbed habitat that’s increasingly hard to find in the southern Appalachians.
This isn’t a manicured state park with visitor centers and paved loops. Bear Paw is wilder and less developed, which is exactly its appeal. Expect unmarked or lightly marked trails that wind through dense hardwood forests, across rocky outcrops, and along ridgelines with views that reward the effort it takes to reach them. Hiking and nature observation are the primary draws, and birders will find the area particularly productive during spring and fall migration.
Because Bear Paw is classified as a natural area rather than a state park, facilities are minimal. Camping availability is unconfirmed — check with the NC Division of Parks and Recreation before planning an overnight trip, and come prepared to pack everything in and out.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall. May and June bring wildflower displays and nesting songbirds, while October delivers some of the finest fall color in western North Carolina. Summer offers cool relief at elevation when the piedmont swelters.
Bear Paw rewards visitors who prefer discovery over convenience — the kind of place you find on a map and feel like you found on your own.
