Schodack Island State Park
New York (Saratoga/Capital District County)
Schodack Island State Park sits along the Hudson River in New York’s Capital District, where 1,060 acres of floodplain forest, wetlands, and open fields create one of the region’s most underappreciated natural escapes. Established in 2002, the park occupies a peninsula that was once a true island before sediment gradually connected it to the eastern shoreline.
What makes Schodack Island worth the trip is its wild, riverine character. The Hudson here feels untamed — bald eagles nest in the towering cottonwoods, great blue herons patrol the shallows, and the mudflats draw shorebirds during migration. Birders consider it one of the best spots in the Capital District, particularly from late fall through early spring when eagle activity peaks.
The park offers roughly seven miles of multi-use trails that wind through dense bottomland forest and along the river’s edge. Hiking and biking are popular in warmer months, while cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over in winter. Kayaking and canoeing along the Hudson provide a different perspective entirely — paddle the quiet backwater channels for the best wildlife viewing.
Fishing is productive here, with striped bass, largemouth bass, and catfish all present in the river. Picnic areas with river views make for easy day-trip planning.
Camping availability has not been confirmed, so check with New York State Parks directly before planning an overnight stay.
Visit in early October for peak fall color reflecting off the Hudson, or in December and January when the resident bald eagles are most active. Come prepared for muddy trails after rain — this is a floodplain, after all.
