Lake Lauderdale State Park
New York (Saratoga/Capital District County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of the Capital District region, Lake Lauderdale State Park offers 117 acres of quiet escape just a short drive from the hustle of Albany and Saratoga Springs. Established in 1968, this modest park centers on its namesake lake — a calm, spring-fed body of water that draws swimmers, anglers, and picnickers looking for a low-key day outdoors.
The lake itself is the main attraction. A sandy beach area provides a comfortable spot for families to wade and swim during summer months, while the surrounding shoreline offers decent fishing for bass and panfish. Rowboats and canoes work well here; the lake is small enough to feel intimate but large enough to spend a lazy afternoon exploring its edges.
Beyond the water, wooded trails wind through the park’s hardwood forest, making for pleasant short hikes — nothing strenuous, but enough to stretch your legs and spot white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and songbirds. Picnic areas with tables and grills are scattered throughout, and the park sees far fewer crowds than nearby Saratoga Spa or Grafton Lakes, which is part of its charm.
The best time to visit is late June through early September, when the beach is open and the water is warm enough for swimming. Spring and fall bring gorgeous foliage and solitude in equal measure.
Lake Lauderdale is the kind of place where you bring a cooler, a paperback, and no particular agenda — and that’s exactly the point.
