Green Lakes State Park
New York (Central County)
About This Park
This recreation area is part of Green River Lake
Green Lakes State Park sits in the heart of Central New York, where two glacial lakes glow an almost unreal shade of turquoise. Established in 1928 and spanning nearly 2,000 acres, the park is anchored by Round Lake and Green Lake — both meromictic lakes, meaning their water layers never mix. Fewer than a handful of such lakes exist in the Western Hemisphere, making this geology alone worth the trip.
A 5.5-mile trail loops both lakes, winding through old-growth forest that feels more Pacific Northwest than Upstate New York. The path around Green Lake hugs limestone bluffs and drops to shoreline overlooks where the water’s emerald color is striking even on overcast days. Round Lake’s trail is quieter and more wooded — a good pick if you want solitude.
Swimming is available at the designated beach on Green Lake during summer months, and the park operates an 18-hole golf course that draws locals year-round. Fishing, paddling, and cross-country skiing fill out the seasonal calendar. Picnic pavilions and playgrounds make it practical for families.
Camping availability has varied over the years, so check with New York State Parks directly for current site status and reservations before planning an overnight stay.
Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot for visiting. The lake colors are most vivid under direct sun in June and July, but September brings fall foliage that frames the turquoise water beautifully. Arrive early on summer weekends — the parking lot fills fast.
