Grafton Lakes State Park
New York (Saratoga/Capital District County)
Tucked into the rolling hills east of Troy, Grafton Lakes State Park spreads across 2,545 acres of hardwood forests, kettle ponds, and rocky terrain that feels far more remote than its 30-minute drive from Albany suggests. Established in 1971, the park centers around five ponds — Long Pond, Mill Pond, Second Pond, Shaver Pond, and Martin-Dunham Reservoir — each offering a different experience for swimmers, anglers, and paddlers.
Summer draws the biggest crowds, when the sandy beach at Long Pond opens for swimming and the surrounding picnic areas fill with families. Kayaking and canoeing are popular on the quieter ponds, where you can drift beneath hemlocks and spot great blue herons along the shoreline. Anglers pull largemouth bass and panfish from several of the ponds, with early morning offering the best action.
When the leaves turn, Grafton becomes a hiking destination worth seeking out. Over 25 miles of trails wind through the park, ranging from easy lakeside walks to more challenging ridge routes with views across the Rensselaer Plateau. In winter, those same trails become excellent cross-country skiing and snowshoeing corridors, and the frozen ponds draw ice fishers.
The park does not operate a traditional campground, so plan on day visits or look to nearby options for overnight stays. Mountain biking and horseback riding are permitted on designated trails, adding variety for return trips.
Visit in late September or early October for peak foliage and smaller crowds — the reflection of maples across Long Pond is worth the drive alone.
