Perched on the Ocotillo Hills above Carlsbad, Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park offers something rare in the state park system — a fully accredited zoo set within 1,500 acres of authentic Chihuahuan Desert landscape. Rather than importing exotic species, the park showcases the animals and plants that actually live in this region, making it one of the best places in New Mexico to understand the desert ecosystem on its own terms.

The indoor/outdoor zoo houses more than 40 native species, including javelinas, mountain lions, bison, elk, and a impressive collection of rattlesnakes and other reptiles. The aviary draws birders hoping to spot roadrunners, golden eagles, and burrowing owls up close. Beyond the animal exhibits, the park maintains an extensive greenhouse and succulent garden featuring hundreds of cacti and desert plants, many of them labeled and interpreted along paved walking paths.

A 1.3-mile trail loops through the grounds, weaving between exhibits and offering panoramic views of the Pecos River Valley and the Guadalupe Mountains to the south. The trail is mostly paved and accessible, though some sections climb steeply enough to get your heart rate up.

Visit between October and April to avoid the punishing summer heat — morning hours are best for seeing active animals regardless of season. The park does not offer camping, but Carlsbad sits just minutes away with full services, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a short drive south, making this an easy and rewarding stop on a southeastern New Mexico road trip.
