Brantley Lake State Park sits along the Pecos River in southeastern New Mexico’s Eddy County, offering 3,000 acres of high-desert landscape centered around the Brantley Reservoir. This is Chihuahuan Desert country — wide-open skies, red-tinged bluffs, and a surprising oasis of water that draws wildlife and visitors alike.

The lake itself stretches across roughly 3,000 surface acres when full, making it one of the larger bodies of water in southern New Mexico. Anglers come for white bass, largemouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish, with white bass runs in spring drawing crowds from across the region. A boat ramp provides easy access for motorized and non-motorized watercraft, and the calm waters are well-suited for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

Beyond the water, the park’s desert terrain rewards hikers and birdwatchers. The riparian habitat along the Pecos River corridor attracts migratory birds, including great blue herons, sandhill cranes in winter, and various raptors. Keep an eye out for mule deer and the occasional pronghorn at dawn and dusk.

The park offers developed campsites with electric hookups, as well as primitive sites for those who prefer a quieter setup. RV travelers will find pull-through sites with full utility access.

Visit in spring (March through May) or fall (September through November) to avoid the intense summer heat that pushes daytime temperatures above 100°F. Winter nights can dip below freezing, but clear skies make for exceptional stargazing in this low-light-pollution corner of New Mexico.
