Tip-Top House
New Hampshire (Coös County)
Perched at the summit of Mount Washington — the highest peak in the northeastern United States at 6,288 feet — Tip-Top House stands as one of New Hampshire’s most remarkable historic landmarks. Built in 1853 as a hotel for intrepid summit visitors, this sturdy stone building has weathered more than 170 years of some of the most extreme weather on Earth. Today it operates as a museum within Mount Washington State Park, offering visitors a fascinating window into 19th-century alpine tourism.
Step inside and you’ll find preserved period furnishings and interpretive displays that tell the story of the daring travelers who once spent the night at this elevation, enduring winds that have been recorded at speeds exceeding 200 mph. The thick stone walls that kept those early guests alive still stand solid against the elements.
Beyond the house itself, the summit area rewards visitors with panoramic views stretching across four states and into Canada on clear days. Hiking the surrounding Presidential Range, exploring the Mount Washington Observatory’s weather museum, and riding the historic Cog Railway or driving the Auto Road to the top are all part of the experience.
The best time to visit is June through October, when the summit buildings are open and the Auto Road is accessible. Come prepared for dramatically colder and windier conditions than the base — temperature drops of 30 degrees or more are common. Layers, wind protection, and sturdy footwear are essential no matter the season.
