Odiorne Point State Park
New Hampshire (Rockingham County)
Odiorne Point State Park occupies 333.7 acres along New Hampshire’s largest undeveloped stretch of Atlantic coastline in Rockingham County. This is where New Hampshire meets the sea in its most raw, unmanicured form — rocky tide pools, salt marshes, and cobblestone beaches that feel worlds away from the nearby resort town of Rye.
The park’s real draw is its tidal zone. At low tide, the rocky pools teem with sea stars, crabs, periwinkles, and anemones, making this one of the best tide-pooling spots in northern New England. The Seacoast Science Center, located within the park, offers exhibits and guided walks that help visitors make sense of what they’re seeing in those pools — especially valuable if you’re visiting with kids.
A network of trails winds through diverse habitats: follow the Shoreline Trail for ocean views, cut inland through stands of white oak and pitch pine, or explore the remnants of World War II-era military fortifications, including concrete bunkers from Battery 204 that once guarded Portsmouth Harbor. The juxtaposition of crumbling military history against wild coastline gives Odiorne a character most state parks lack.
Birdwatchers should bring binoculars — the salt pannes and marshes attract herons, egrets, and migrating shorebirds, particularly during spring and fall passage.
There is no camping at Odiorne Point. Visit between late May and early October for the best conditions, though winter visits offer stark, dramatic coastal scenery and solitude. Expect a modest day-use fee during peak season.
